About Us

Chris, You’ve Been a Photographer For How Long?!

Thank you for your interest. My name is Chris Cummins and I am the owner and chief photographer for Glow Imagery.

I began my photography life more than 20 years ago as a high school student seeking a creative outlet for all of the angst and torment of those teenage years.

Photography instantly took over my life. I have never looked back.

Painfully shy and never happy about it, photography was my means to overcome the awkwardness of that time in my life.

My overwhelming desire to be a professional photographer took me to the University of Missouri, where I studied photojournalism and graduated with a college degree in photojournalism in 1996.

I loved telling stories of people through images that capture their joy and emotions. It’s those warm and fuzzy parts of all of us that remind us of life’s wonder and mystery.

My career began as a newspaper photojournalist working for community dailies in the Farm Belt and North Carolina in the mid 1990s.

In early 2003, while in North Carolina, the declining future of the newspaper industry was starting to bother me and I didn’t see any answers. The job had begun to lose its charm.

My two passions in life are photography and people. So I looked around for what could be a next step that included these two passions. The answer was weddings and portraits.

Looking for a change of scenery I returned to my native Kansas City in 2003 and opened my photography studio that would later become Glow Imagery.

It’s my belief that being the trusted caretaker of your memories is a tremendous gift. To look at your images long after the photographs are made and see not just what you saw on your wedding day but what you felt in still images is such a beautiful experience. It gives me goosebumps to see the delight in our clients’ faces when they first see their images.

It never, ever gets old.

What Is Chris Like Away From His Cameras?

In my own life, my wife and baby girl Charlotte are my world. Asking for more from life would be greedy because these two people are such a blessing. My wife, Gen, is a sous chef at Andre’s, our marriage had to come with a gym membership!

In the down moments I am usually over a hot grill or smoker working on a new creation of culinary delight, reading or being my daughter’s free amusement ride. Life is so good.

Can you imagine the people you love not being a part of your life? I can’t either. Do you feel your photography should show you why you feel that way? I do too.

What Makes Chris Different From Other Photographers?

My photography style is about a unique combination of three things. The first is my passion for discovering and recording the true, unscripted moments of your wedding day. The second is doing portraits of you in a relaxed, comfortable, natural approach. Lastly, add in our dramatic, alluring lighting style we love from the old Hollywood studio portrait photographers and there you have it, the Glow Imagery style.

Glow Imagery is about photography that celebrates all that is true and fabulous about you and the people you care about. This style of photography is not for everyone, is it for you?

Nine Crazy Questions With Chris:

1) If you could have a beer with anyone living or dead who would it be?
That’s tough. Lost of people. Right now it would have to be Theodore Roosevelt. He had an amazing mind and life.
2) Why do you persist in being a Royals fan?
That’s tough too. As a kid they were soooo much better and they always made my dad happy and that made me happy. They’ll turn it around.
3) How is photographing brides and babies similar?
That’s a great question. I think they both respond to a photographer that makes fun a priority. They both seem to appreciate a fast worker and someone who treats their mom really well. A little patience with them on my part helps too. Other than that they are totally different.
4) Why is it no one ever gets to meet your two dogs at your studio?
They are SUPER friendly and easily turn jealous. They can’t possibly understand why you would want to look at our albums and photography and not them.
5) If a client is a Kansas fan and you went to Missouri, what’s up? Can we still be friends?
I think so. I have a great many Jayhawks that are our best clients. I’m sad the rivalry is over.
6) What is the craziest thing you have seen as a wedding photographer?
I had to be a firefighter at one wedding. A centerpiece in the far corner of the reception caught fire from some candles and no one else was around, so I started throwing water from glasses onto it. Problem solved.
7) Do you have any pre-wedding rituals you do before getting started with the day’s photography?
I do an amazing electric slide. Just kidding.
8) So… previous to your studio, you spent many years as a newspaper photographer. What’s the craziest thing you have ever witnessed as a newspaper photographer?
Lots of crazy stuff. The most crazy was a serious disaster caused by a hurricane in 1999 while I was working in eastern North Carolina. At one point I was up to my neck in floodwater holding a camera out of the water photographing an evacuation. Weddings and babies are definitely easier.
9) Are going to make all of us in the wedding party jump in the air at the same time?
No. Heavens no. I’m open to your ideas and requests. If you really want it, I’ll do it and try my very best to get a great image. But I do want your photography to be as unique as you are.
